WIMA QLD is a branch of the Australian division of the Women's International Motorcycle Association (WIMA). WIMA aims to promote and support motorcycling among women. The club was founded in 1950 in the United States of America (USA) by the remarkable Louise Scherbyn. By 1952 WIMA had a seven nation membership consisting of the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Holland, Belgium, and Czechoslovakia. Now after its fiftieth anniversary WIMA is alive and well with the original seven nation membership having grown to 14 active national divisions and contacts in several other countries. The Australian division began life in 1950 when it was invited by the founder to become the first member outside the USA. Australia now has WIMA branches in almost every state and territory. WIMA Australia participates as a member of the broader motorcycling community and attends many motorcycle events and rallies as well as co-ordinating its own charity event - the Pink Ribbon Ride for breast cancer research.
WIMA QLD is expanding rapidly and benefits
from
a diverse membership; women from different backgrounds, with different skill
levels and tastes in motorcycles - from cruisers to sports bikes. The club
is friendly and supportive with a keen sense of fun.
Belonging to WIMA means an opportunity to learn skills from others, become part of the wider motorcycling community, feel like less of an anomaly in the macho world of motorbikes, and most of all - to always have someone to ride with.
You don't have to be able to ride or own a motorcycle to join WIMA, you need only be a woman who enjoys motorcycling. Interested in joining? Read about the benefits of membership and download an application_form. Or come along to a meeting or a ride and sound us out.
From former State Representative, Kerrie Smith:
Hello and welcome to the WIMA QLD web site.
The women of WIMA Queensland are an amazing and diverse group.
One of the things about WIMA is that when you come along to a meeting or ride you'll know straight away that you have at least 2 things in common with the people there. You have an interest in motorcycling. You are a woman!
WIMA
encourages women to join from all walks of life; we have members who range
in age from teenagers to grandmothers! We have a current member who started
riding after being a pillion for years with her husband, another who was 50ish
when she took up riding and hasnt looked back! We have people who have
been riding for 20 years or more and people who come to their first meeting
after getting their license that day; we even have people who are still on
their Learners. No matter what your riding level youll be in an encouraging
and safe environment.
The group is about riding, supporting each other and having a relaxing environment in which to socialize. You dont even need to ride to join, just an interest, or maybe the group can help you find the courage to get out there and get your license. We do encourage members to bring along their partners, husbands, families and friends to the rides and café rides, but the meetings are where we get into the business stuff so only financial members are able to vote on agenda items.
No matter what stage youre at with your riding, from beginner to expert there will be someone at your level. If youre a beginner well buddy you up with someone for the ride to make sure youre doing OK. We dont have a racer attitude to riding and ensure we follow the road rules on our rides. All rides have a designated 'Ride Leader', and a 'Tail End Charlie' so no one will get lost or left behind. Before each ride the Ride Leader discusses the route we are taking and each designated stop to ensure all are clear on the days events.
We look forward to seeing you at a WIMA meeting or ride soon!
