Moondyne Rally 1998The Saturday morning of the rally was gloomy and drizzling in Melbourne. Just the sort of weather that didn't convince you to get a motorbike. Still the rally was happening, rain, hail or shine, so we donned our wet weather gear for the ride. With Jazz, my tank dog, on board we set off, navigating the unpredictable Saturday morning traffic on slippery roads. Soon we were clear of the big smoke and heading for the hills. By the time we reached Broadford, the weather had cleared and it was time to strip off a few steaming layers and grab some lunch. The weather improved with every kilometre up the Goulburn Valley Highway until we arrived, sweating in dri riders at the rally site. Through the heat haze we spied Moira in the control tent, looking cool and relaxed in a sarong. "Hope you brought your togs. Everyone is swimming down the river." I know they talk about weather being different over the range, but what a change. I guess I wasn't going to need my parka after all! By late afternoon everyone had arrived and the rally was in full swing. The control tent was out of control with badges, dim sims, and hot dogs flying everywhere. Meanwhile Barb had the gymkhana events well in hand. Liz and Steve made a surprise appearance at 9 months plus pregnant. Actually Liz, we were only joking when we said it would be great if you delivered at the rally. It was a beautiful summer's evening for partying. We were particularly popular when we offered free midnight munchies. Sunday morning dawned baking hot again. After a leisurely breakfast we headed down to enjoy the coolness by the river and sleep off the hangovers (especially Maria G. who parties as hard as she rides). We spent the day throwing our dogs and ourselves into the refreshing water. Late afternoon it was time to head back to Melbourne. Funnily enough, Jack and I left about a half hour before Moira, but by the time we reached Nagambie she had appeared in the mirrors. We discovered a new back road turning off the freeway at the Puckapunyal exit and winding through country lanes to Broadford. It was a great weekend and I am looking forward to seeing everyone again next year. Michele Olsen |
